Update on our Level five (5) Diploma in Education and Training qualification

The level five (5) Diploma in Education and Training programme (DET) is in its final year of teaching as it will be replaced by a new initial teacher training qualification in September 2024. This new qualification will be offered by awarding bodies to those seeking to teach in the work-based training and further education sectors. The level five (5) Diploma in Education and Training qualification which we are currently offering will no longer available for registrations once the new qualification comes into effect from the 1st of September 2024.

As a provider, we will continue to provide academic and all other support to all our level five (5) Diploma in Education and Training (DET) registered students to ensure they achieve the qualification before its registration is phased out.

If you studied the level five (5) Diploma in Education and Training qualification with us at any time, and you are wondering how the qualification change will affect you, please get in touch with our DET department team at detsupport@mrcollege.ac.uk by the 31st of July 2024, and we will be happy to support you.

If you successfully completed the qualification with us and have received your certificate, we encourage you to apply for your QTLS with the Society for Education and Training (SET) if you haven’t already done so.

All the best in your career progression.

    Teaching & Learning

All units are delivered using a diverse range of teaching and learning methods that support independent student learning. These include formal lectures, online teaching materials, and research activities. Learners are encouraged to engage with learning through discussions, role-plays, feedback team presentations, and Q and A sessions and educational tours.

    Assessment:

This course seeks to enable trainees to engage with and evaluate a range of assessment techniques as part of their pedagogical practice. Each unit is assessed using a range of methods, typically including essays, reflective reports, individual and group presentations, as well as peer and self-reviews of day-to-day teaching practice.

Teaching practice is integral to the successful completion of the course, and so trainees undergo a minimum of eight teaching practice observations as part of the course assessment process. Observed teaching practice forms part of the assessment of four units out of seven taught in the course. The planning, delivery resources, self-evaluation reviews and feedback from each of the observations will be compiled in trainees teaching portfolios.

Trainees maintain a professional development portfolio, which promotes personal and professional development which helps to prepare trainees for effective practice. The components of this portfolio are aligned with unit assessments and teaching practice observations.

    Teaching Practice

Teaching practice is integral to the entire programme, and through this, students will demonstrate their own understanding of the principles of teaching and learning. Through the teaching practice, trainee teachers will demonstrate their ability to plan and deliver lessons and assess their students. They may need Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS) in order to work in the education sector. Those with a criminal record may not get DBS clearance and so are unlikely to get employment in the education sector.

Trainee teachers will have to evidence 100 teaching practice hours. They will be observed for a minimum of eight hours over a minimum of eight occasions where mentors or tutors will provide constructive feedback to further their development as teachers.

Teaching practice will involve the following:

    • A number of teaching practice locations/settings/contexts
    • Teaching across more than one level
    • Teaching a variety of learners
    • Teaching individuals and groups
    • Experience of non-teaching roles
    • Gaining subject specialist knowledge through workplace mentoring

    Progression Routes on Completion

Trainees who successfully complete the course will be eligible to apply for QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills) with the Society for Education and Training. This is equivalent to QTS and is suitable for those who may consider teaching in the post-14 education and skills sectors.

This course adequately prepares graduates to teach in the Further Education and Skills sector. Upon its successful completion, graduates will be eligible to apply for the Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status with the Society for Education and Training (SET). This professional status qualifies holders to teach in Further Education colleges, sixth form colleges, training and skills providers, vocational skills training in organisations and or in the voluntary sector.

Since April 2012, Further Education qualified teachers with QTLS have been recognised through an Act of Parliament as equivalent in status to teachers with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in schools, opening opportunities for career development and wider employment within a wide range of contexts.

This course offers a robust professional development route to QTLS and further development of careers. Progression from this programme has many routes, whether that is onto further study at Master’s’ level or into employment.
